What it means when a battery maker goes bust

GivEnergy went into administration in April 2026 and stopped trading. The hardware in those homes carried on running. The promise behind it did not, and the gap between those two things is the whole story.

What happened to GivEnergy

GivEnergy Ltd was the best known domestic battery brand in Britain. On 9 April 2026 it entered administration and ceased trading, with all 74 staff made redundant and unsecured creditors owed over £17 million. Administrators were appointed and the company stopped honouring hardware warranty claims.

No buyer had been confirmed when the administrators filed their Statement of Proposals in late May 2026. For the tens of thousands of homes with a GivEnergy battery on the wall, that raised one obvious question, and the answer is better than most people feared.

The battery did not stop working

A home battery is a self contained piece of kit. It does not phone home to keep charging. When the manufacturer went under, those systems carried on taking solar, carried on covering the evening peak, and carried on doing the job they were bought for. The risk sits with future warranty claims, firmware and cloud services, not with basic operation.

What still works, and what does not

Part of your systemWhat a manufacturer collapse changes
Battery and inverter hardwareNothing immediately. The kit is self contained and keeps charging from your solar and powering your home exactly as before.
The manufacturer warrantyEffectively gone as a promise from that company. GivEnergy's 12 year warranty, with unlimited cycles and a 70% retention guarantee on systems installed from September 2023, is no longer being honoured by GivEnergy Ltd.
Spare partsDependent on remaining stock and third parties. There is no factory behind it any more.
The app and cloud serviceAt risk. Remote monitoring, tariff integration and smart scheduling usually run through the manufacturer's servers, and someone has to keep paying for those servers.
Firmware updatesStop. No new features, and no fixes for anything discovered later.
Your installer's workmanship warrantyUnaffected by the manufacturer's failure, as long as your installer is still trading. This is why who fitted it matters as much as who made it.

Position as reported at the date on this page. The UK Energy Storage Association issued guidance for owners shortly after the administration, and its first piece of advice was to go back to your installer.

A home battery through the day Four stages of a single day, stacked in order. One, overnight the battery charges from the grid on a cheaper off-peak rate. Two, through the morning the house runs from the stored charge instead of the grid. Three, around midday spare solar refills the battery rather than being exported. Four, through the evening peak the battery discharges to power the house instead of importing at peak price. The cycle then repeats the next day. A home battery through the day 1 Overnight charge Fills up on a cheaper off-peak rate 2 Morning The house runs from the battery, not the grid 3 Midday top up Spare solar refills it rather than exporting 4 Evening peak Discharges instead of importing at peak price The cycle then repeats the next day.
The daily cycle runs on the hardware in your house, not on a manufacturer server.

Five checks worth making this week

Step 1

Confirm it is still running

Open the app or look at the unit. If the battery is charging and discharging on its normal schedule, the hardware is fine. That is the usual outcome and it is worth establishing before you worry about anything else.

Step 2

Find the paperwork

You want the installer's name, the installation date, the MCS certificate and the warranty documents. Every conversation that follows is easier with those in front of you.

Step 3

Go back to your installer first

Your contract for the installation is with the company that sold and fitted the system, not with the factory that built the cells. That is where any claim starts, and it is what the industry guidance told GivEnergy owners to do.

Step 4

Ask what depends on the cloud

Find out whether your battery will still run a basic charge and discharge schedule if the manufacturer's servers go dark, or whether the clever scheduling lives entirely in their system. The answer changes what you should plan for.

Step 5

Check who backs any guarantee you were sold

If your installation came with an insurance backed guarantee, look at who underwrites it and what it actually covers. A guarantee underwritten by a third party can survive the failure of the company that sold it. One written by the manufacturer cannot.

Be careful who calls you

A well publicised collapse brings out cold callers offering to transfer, reinstate or replace a warranty for a fee. No third party can reinstate a manufacturer warranty from a company that has stopped trading. Take the details, check the business yourself, and never pay on the call.

If you own a battery from a manufacturer that has gone under and you are not sure where that leaves you, a free 45 minute remote video design call is a sensible place to start. No home visit, and a written quote on the call if you want one.

The real lesson is about counterparties

A warranty is not a property of the battery. It is a promise from a company, and it is worth exactly what that company is worth on the day you need to call it in. GivEnergy published one of the longest terms in the UK market. Twelve years, unlimited cycles, 70% capacity retention. None of that survived the administration, because the thing being tested was never the cells.

So when you are comparing storage, the specification sheet is only half the job. These are the questions that decide whether the paperwork means anything in year eight.

  • Who honours the warranty? The manufacturer, the installer, or a third party insurer. Get that in writing before you sign.
  • Is there a UK entity behind it? A UK registered company you can actually pursue is worth more than a support address in another time zone.
  • What breaks if the app goes? Ask whether the battery falls back to a local schedule or simply stops optimising.
  • Who fitted it, and will they be there in five years? The workmanship warranty is the one most people end up using.
  • What does the warranty actually guarantee? Years is the headline. Capacity retention and energy throughput are the clauses that decide whether a claim succeeds.

How the published headline terms compare

ProductPublished headline warranty
Tesla Powerwall 310 years with 80% capacity retention in the UK, unlimited cycles for self consumption, time of use and backup. Requires a working internet connection for firmware updates.
Fox ESS EQ range12 years.

Manufacturers' own published warranty documents, as checked on the date at the top of this page. Two examples from the wider UK market, to show how the terms are structured rather than to rank brands. They are not a list of what your local OVO expert fits, and other manufacturers publish longer terms with cycle caps attached, which is why the document matters more than the headline.

How OVO is set up around this

OVO supplies energy to 4 million customers. Installations are carried out by regional partner businesses that hold the exclusive OVO partnership for their area: 16 installer businesses Powered by OVO, selected from around 200 assessed, who have completed over 1,000 OVO solar and battery installations in the last 12 months. Every one of those installations carries the OVO guaranteed 10 year workmanship warranty.

That structure exists for the reason this article is about. The workmanship guarantee is backed by OVO rather than resting on a single installation business, and your local OVO expert is one number to call whoever made the cells in the cabinet. Full pricing sits on the costs page, and how we decide when to store solar against when to export it is set out on the strategy page.

Put your postcode into the coverage page to find your regional partner, then book the free 45 minute video design call and see exactly who would be standing behind your system.

FAQs

Owner questions, answered

My battery is from a manufacturer that has gone bust. Do I need to do anything?

Probably not much, beyond tidying up your records. The hardware is self contained, so it carries on charging from your solar and powering the house. What has gone is future warranty cover from that manufacturer, plus any certainty about firmware and cloud services. Find your installation paperwork, note who fitted it and when, and keep an eye on whether the app still does what you rely on it for.

Is a GivEnergy warranty completely worthless now?

As a promise from GivEnergy Ltd, effectively yes. The company ceased trading in April 2026 and is not honouring hardware warranty claims. What may still hold value is everything sitting alongside it: your installer's own workmanship warranty, any insurance backed guarantee that came with the installation, and whatever protection came with the way you paid. Start with the installer and work outwards.

Should I replace a working battery from a failed manufacturer?

Rarely. Replacing kit that is doing its job is money spent for nothing. The sensible triggers are a genuine fault the hardware cannot recover from, the loss of a function you actually depend on, or a decision to expand the system anyway. If you are adding solar or more storage, that is the moment to look at the whole picture rather than patch around an orphaned product.

How do I judge whether a battery brand will still be here in ten years?

Look at three things. How long the parent company has existed and what else it makes, because a business with one product line in one market is a narrower bet. Whether there is a UK registered entity to deal with. And whether anyone other than the manufacturer stands behind the promise, such as an installer warranty or a third party insurance backed guarantee. None of that guarantees survival, but it changes the odds.

Does a longer warranty mean a better battery?

Not on its own. A long term capped at a fixed number of cycles and a shorter term with unlimited cycles for normal household use are different products, and which suits you depends on how hard you cycle the battery. The arithmetic is worth doing: a cap of 6,000 cycles is over 16 years at one full cycle a day, so for most homes the years run out before the cycles do. Read the capacity retention percentage and any energy throughput clause as well as the number of years, then read the name on the document.

What does the OVO 10 year workmanship warranty cover?

The installation work itself: the fit, the wiring, the mounting, the commissioning, and putting right anything that goes wrong with how the system was installed. It sits separately from the manufacturer's product warranty on the cells and electronics, and it is guaranteed by OVO rather than by the fitting business alone. The two protect against different failures, which is the point of having both.
