The spread is almost entirely fixed costs. Labour alone is £2,051 on every job regardless of size, which is why the big system is the value buy.
A 5.2 kWh usable battery adds £2,444 to any installation, about £470 per usable kWh, fitted and commissioned.
It's flat across all three system sizes, and it's what unlocks the 20p export rate rather than 15p, so it partly pays for itself through the tariff alone.

Scaffolding, labour, the inverter and the paperwork cost the same whether you fit 6 panels or 14. Going from 6 panels to 14 costs about 25% more and generates 133% more electricity, so half-covering a roof is the most expensive way to buy solar.
Standard SEG rates elsewhere start around 4p. At 20p, surplus generation stops being waste and starts being income.

It sounds backwards. It isn't. Using a unit of your own solar saves you the 26.11p you'd have paid to import it, but you give up the 20p you'd have earned exporting it. Net gain: just 6.11p.
Fill that same battery overnight at the off-peak rate instead, and you save 13.11p on every unit, while your solar goes out to the grid at the full 20p. Better than twice the benefit, from the same kit.

Solar panels run on daylight, not heat. The UK averages 998 kWh per kWp per year, about 2.7 peak sun hours a day. Even Aberdeen beats a lot of Germany, which has more installed solar than anywhere in Europe.
Figures assume a south-facing roof at optimal pitch with no significant shading. Your free design accounts for your actual orientation, pitch and shading. Export income assumes roughly 55% of generation is exported on a typical system with battery.
A typical installation runs from about £6,411 for a 6-panel (2.7 kWp) system to £7,990 for a 14-panel (6.3 kWp) system. Adding battery storage costs around £2,444 more.
The important number is cost per kWp, and it drops sharply as the system grows, from £2,374 per kWp on a small system to £1,268 per kWp on a large one. That's because scaffolding, labour, the inverter and certification cost the same regardless of how many panels you fit.
Battery storage adds around £2,444 for roughly 5.2 kWh of usable capacity, about £470 per usable kWh, fitted and commissioned. That price is flat across all our system sizes.
It also lifts your export rate from 15p to 20p per kWh, so on a system exporting 3,500 kWh a year the tariff uplift alone is worth about £175 a year before you count any storage savings.
About 998 kWh per kWp installed per year as a UK average, roughly 2.7 peak sun hours a day. A 6.3 kWp system (14 panels) generates around 6,300 kWh a year.
It varies by region: Devon and Cornwall reach about 1,060 kWh per kWp, London and the Thames Valley about 1,000, Yorkshire about 910, and north east Scotland about 850. Even at the lowest end, a full roof generates more than most households use.
Typically 7 to 14 years, depending on size. A 14-panel system with battery pays back in around 7 years; 10 panels in around 9; 6 panels in around 14.
Bigger systems pay back faster, because the fixed costs are spread across more generating capacity. Panels are warranted to keep performing for 25 years, so a 7-year payback means roughly 18 years of pure return.

OVO's SEG Install Exclusive tariff pays 20p per kWh when OVO installs both your solar panels and your battery, or 15p per kWh for solar only.
For context, OVO's standard SEG rate, which is open to customers of any supplier, is 4p per kWh. On a system exporting 3,500 kWh a year, that's roughly £700 versus £140.
Get them together if you can, but if you're sequencing, think about the battery first. A battery sized to your daily usage saves money from day one by shifting your consumption to cheap off-peak hours. It works in December as well as June, with no dependence on sunshine.
Then fill the roof with as much solar as it will take. The marginal cost of each extra panel is low, and with a 20p export rate you're paid properly for everything you don't use.
With a 20p export rate, they're much closer than people assume. Using a unit of your own solar saves the 26.11p you'd have paid to import, but costs you the 20p you'd have earned exporting it. Net benefit: about 6p.
Charging your battery off-peak instead saves around 13p per unit while your solar goes to the grid at the full 20p. For most homes with a battery that's the better strategy, and it's what we'll configure for you.
Match it to your daily electricity use, not your roof. Most UK homes use 8 to 12 kWh a day, and a large share of that lands in the evening peak, which is exactly what a 5.2 kWh usable battery is sized to cover.
Oversizing wastes money: a battery you only half-cycle earns half as much. On your design call we'll look at your actual consumption before recommending anything.
North-facing roofs generate roughly 60 to 70% of what a south-facing roof would, which often still works, particularly on east/west split arrays, which spread generation across the morning and evening rather than peaking at noon.
Shading is more of a problem than orientation, but optimisers or micro-inverters usually solve it. We assess both from aerial imagery on your design call and tell you straight if it isn't worth doing.
You need to own the property, so we can only install for homeowners. We install on detached, semi-detached and terraced houses.
We're not currently able to install on flats and apartments, because of shared roof ownership and communal wiring. If you own a leasehold house with a roof of your own, get in touch and we'll check.
Domestic solar panels and battery storage installed in residential property in Great Britain currently attract 0% VAT. All prices shown here are what you'd pay.
The relief is set by HMRC and is currently due to run until 31 March 2027, after which the rate is scheduled to return to 5%.
